Our Division

Special Thanks to  Brother  Kevin Kearney for his help in composing this page...

In 1895 Regional Divsion 1 was started in Oneida County at St. Marys Church in Clinton N.Y.   Although at one time there were 11 divisions in Oneida County  many of  them failed to thrive  throughout the years.  The main reason for this was attributed to the fact that  many of the Divisons did not allow Catholic men of Irish Descent into their divisions.  Unfortunatly,  when the orighanl members passed many of the divions failed to thrive.

In 1977, three local brothers , Tim Fitzgerald, Tom Moylan, and Kevin Kearney were intsrumental in revitalizing Divison 6 located in East Utica.  Althogh their attempts were valid, once again membership failed and the division fell.  However on June 19, 1991 the first  inagural meeting of the John C. Devereux Division 1 of Oneida County occu red  with 15 new members at our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Utica, N.Y.  with  Brother Kevin Kearney acting President and Brother Jimmy Carroll - vIice President.  In November of  1991 the division conducted its first elecion with the following members installed  Kevin Kearney - President,  Michael McGurl - Vice President, Jimmy Carroll - Secretary, Robert Kelly- Recording Secretary, Paul Mullin - Financial Secretary, James T. Carroll - Treasurer, and Thurman J. Carl - Chairman of Grevience Committee.

Although the first meeting was held at our Lady Of Lourdes, the division moved to Legion 1376 in New Hartford shortly after its innaguration.  After approximately six years the Divison moved to the Moose Lodge in Marcy N.Y. until it shut down.  The Division then made arrangement with the Mannechhor on Flannigan Rd in Marcy, N.Y to host the Division where it currently exists to this day.  Currently there are tentaive plans to build a Irish Cultural Center located on Varick Street diagonal to St. Joseph - St. Patrick's Church.  this structure would house the Division and all activities.
